Recipe: Citrus infused water with grapefruit and orange

This rich citrus infused water with spurts of grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime is a quick fix for your body after that rigorous workout session! Soothe your body and enrich your mind with the subtle underlying tones of citrusy tanginess.

Grapefruit + Lemon & Lime + Orange Infused Water

Ingredients

FOR INFUSED WATER

  • 1 Ruby red grapefruit (halfved )
  • 1 Lemon (halved )
  • 1 Lime (halved )
  • 1 Oranges (halved )
  • 1 ltr Water

FOR GARNISH

  • 2-3 pieces Ruby red grapefruit (cut into triangles )

Instructions

CHOOSE FRESH & ORGANIC  

  • Fruits are generally waxed or sprayed with chemicals  
  • We would often use the rind, zest or add the whole fruit for the infusion  
  • Hence, always invest in high quality, organic and ripe fruits  

CLEAN WELL BEFORE USE  

  • If your citrus fruit has a cap at the stem remove it and clean away any dirt
  • Do not use household bleach or soap to wash the fruits
  • Wash the fruits under cold water, rubbing away any dirt with your thumb or finger
  • Be diligent in cleaning the peel of the citrus fruit using a brush
  • Pat dry the citrus fruits using cloth towel or a paper napkin

PREP THE CITRUS

  • Cut all the citrus fruit into half and squeeze out the juice, keep aside
  • Cut the grapefruit into half, and slice them thin. Cut each round into four pieces
  • Repeat the process for the lemon, lime and orange

MAKE THE FRUIT INFUSION 

  • In a large glass pitcher, place 3-4 pieces of grapefruit, orange, lime and lemon inside
  • Pour one-liter water in the glass jug  
  • Slowly pour the squeezed citrus juices into the glass pitcher
  • Refrigerate the infused water for min 30 minutes (atleast), before consuming  
  • If you don’t like having your water chilled, then leave the jug at room temperature  
  • If using infused water bottle, the water will infuse quickly. Add some ice cubes and enjoy. Keep refilling them through the day  

GARNISH SUGGESTIONS

  • You can use the leftover fruit slices for garnish 
  • Cut the grapefruit or lemon into wedges, semi circles or triangles and place them at the rim of your glass and serve 
  • Or you can simply place a clean and washed rosemary sprig if you are a complete fan of the flavor.   
  • Or else, just drop in some mint leaves or a sprig for some enhanced flavor

Add in sparkling water to spruce up your drink   

Use a drop of honey to add a little bit of sweetness, but remember to keep it healthy  

1/2 Teaspoon of any citrus zest of your choice is optional if you like the bitterness   

Try other combinations with Citrus like cinnamon, star anise and fresh herbs like mint or basil 

  • It should feel plump and heavy 

  • When ripe, grapefruits have a slightly flat bottom and top. If it is perfectly round, then it needs to ripen 

  • Ripe fruits will have a smooth, soft and a thin skin 

  • Give the citrus a good squeeze. It should be firm all around. If there are any soft spots, it means that the fruit is going bad 

  • You can refill water throughout day and let sit 30 minutes minimum

  • At the end of the day you can either eat the fruit or toss out 

  • If you want to keep it longer, remove the fresh fruit and rosemary after several hours and add a lid to the pitcher.  

  • Keep a bottle of chilled water ready for infusion or keep some ice 

  • Squeeze all the citrus to have some concentration ready to speed up your infusion  

  • Cut all your garnishes ahead-washed and place it in a bowl, covered & refrigerated

  • Best served chilled (recommended) or with ice cubes

  • If using outdoors, place the glass pitcher in an ice bath

  • Use glass pitchers with lids that will help you strain out the infusions 

  • Use everyday water glasses or balloon shaped water glasses to serve.

  • Refrigerate the infused water in glass bottles or jars itself for easy consumption 

  • Always cover the infused water with a lid

  • If open pitcher, use a cling film. This will help avoid any residual smells into the infused water from the refrigerator 

  • Remove the citrus or the rind after 4 or more hours so that it does not dominate the flavour  

  • Add garnishes just before service
